The first time we noticed this statue - we were searching for a cache (imagine that) - This time i took the time to read the plaque.
Here is how the plaque reads:
End of the Cattle Drive
Dedicated to the men and women of the H F Dangberg Land and Livestock Co
Minden Nevada
1856 – 1976
Donated by Larry R. Willson (1952 – 2003)
Larry spent his childhood on the Dangberg Ranch. Towards the end of his shortened life he commissioned this statue as a tribute to the role models he looked up to at the ranch. He succumbed to the effect of Lou Gehrig’s disease on September 17, 2003.
I researched further and found an article published in the San Diego Union Tribune. It cost $31,000 and the face of the cowboy is that of Larry himself - as the article states "free of the wheelchair and the debilitating disease that took his life."
We have heard the stories about meaning of the hooves being on or off the ground and - IF there is any truth to it - "the rider" DID die "in Battle". But this is a jubilant rearing of both horse and rider!
