In 1936, the smaller of the two orthodox cathedrals here was erected to serve the local Russian Orthodox community. The cornerston ws laid in honor of Great Prince St. Alexander Nevsky. This small chapel served a growing community through three expansions before a larger cathedral was built.
The foundation of the new cathedral was blessed on August 30, 1989, and holy relics of St. Herman of Alaska were placed therein on September 12, 1989.
The great cathedral was consecrated by the firt hierach, His Eminence Metrolpolitan Vitaly on October 5/18, 1997. The original church was rededicated to honor the Icon of Our Lady of Tikhvin.
