From the Wildernet website:
The Loop Trail is located north of the Little Manatee River accessible through a locked gate. Stop at the park's ranger station and obtain the trail map and the gate combination before driving to the small unpaved parking area. A primitive campsite is located 2 miles "in" and may be reserved.
The trail actually begins along a short connector trail found between the loop and the parking lot. It is advisable to begin this trail early in the morning and hike in a northward direction through the open sand scrub habitat while the sun is still low. Past the primitive site, about 3 miles along the trail, the habitat evolves into a shaded dense hardwood hammock. Other vegetation scattered along the 6.5-mile trail includes saw palmettos, blue berries, prickly pear, and native azaleas. Approximately 3 miles of riverbank trail carry you back to the connector trail and the parking lot. Be sure to keep an eye out for the Florida scrub jay that enjoys the low-growing scrub trees found in the open sand meadows. Wild turkey, fox, deer, and bobcat have been recorded at the park.
Despite the limited foot traffic, much effort went into establishing the trail. Nearly 20 footbridges and several boardwalks assist hikers over low-lying terrain.
The ranger station to obtain the trail map and code for parking is located on Lightfoot Rd. just a little south of the trailhead parking, which is right next to the trailhead.
