Despite the wishes of the nation, Florence Nightingales relatives declined the offer of burying her in Westminster Abbey. The reason being that Florence wished to be buried very simply, and quietly without any fuss. She wished to be laid to rest with her mother and father in the family grave of St Margarets, Wellow, a parish where she had spent some of her childhood. She wished also that only two people accompanied her coffin to the grave and her pallbearers be the children of six army sergeants from different regiments. Her wish of only two people could not be upheld, although the funeral arrangements were kept private the churchyard and lanes round about were full of men women and children who came to show their respect to such a wonderful person. The Military and Nursing profession both have much to thank her for in steering their progress. This is truely worth a visit if you are in the area. There is also a cache that may be achieved at the same time of your visit 'A Wing and a Prayer' GCH8DC.
