Hannahville Indian Community
The Hannahville Potawatomi Indian Community is a federally recognized Indian Tribe residing in Michigan's Upper Peninsula approximately 15 miles west of Escanaba.
The Potawatomi are an Indian culture with unique history, values and customs. The traditional homeland of the Potawatomi Nation encompassed permanent villages on the southern shores of Lake Michigan to villages scattered across the southern portion of what is now the state of Michigan to present day Detroit. With the arrival of white settlers, the Potawatomi were gradually driven off their lands. Many Potawatomi fled to maintain their freedom. One group relocated in the vicinity of the Cedar River until 1883, when they moved to unoccupied land near Wilson, Michigan with the help of a man named Peter Marksman. It is said that the tribal people were very fond of Peter Marksman and his wife Hannah. It is believed that the tribe decided to name their community after Peter Marksman's wife, Hannah.
The reservation land lies mostly in Harris Township with a small portion extending into both Gourley Township and Bark River Township (Delta County). The tribe has its own school, the Hannahville Indian School which is a charter school that has grades K-12. Students from the reservation also attend Bark River-Harris or Carney-Nadeau depending on where they live. The tribe performs all of its operations on Eastern Time, following suit with Harris Township.
