After an 1894 fire destroyed all the wooden structures along Main Street, the reconstruction of downtown was carried out in brick and stone. James H. McDougall was a leading Salinas merchant, former City Postmaster and County Tax Collector.

This fine example of commercial architecture has since survived earthquakes and economic downturns. Its main tenant now is the breakfast restaurant First Awakenings.
