The cornerstone was laid in 1902, it opened as the city library in 1903, and served as the main library until the 1990's. The city opened its new main library about a block away.
The old Carnegie building has been vacant for about a decade due to concerns about earthquake safety, but seismic renovation has been completed and the city is now looking for a new public use for the historic space.
