The Ames Academy Bell was part of the original Amesville Academy. It was used to call all students to school. It would ring to call students to school in the morning, to call them back from lunch breaks in the afternoon, and would ring when the school day was over to end classes for the day. The bell is said to have come from an old steamboat on the Ohio River. Mr. Cutler brought it to Amesville by horse drawn cart. The cart broke down and he never returned to get it. The bell was used by the Amesville Academy and then transferred to the public school in 1901.

Ames Academy BellWhen the new elementary building was finished in 1955, the owner, Mr. Shafer decided the bell belonged to Amesville and should not be placed in the school. It is now mounted in Gifford Park for all to see.
