In the Newtonville section of Newton, there stands a grand century old building that houses stores on the bottom floor, and masonic-related organizations in the floors above.
According to information in a case of the history of the building and Dalhousie Lodge, Dalhousie Lodge was chartered in Newton in 1851. On September 26, 1896, the cornerstone was laid for a new building to suit the needs of the lodge. Over 400 Masons marched to the location.
Currently, several Masonic Lodges use the facilities, including Dalhousie, Norumbega-Fraternity, and Beth-Horen Lodges. Other organizations such as the Order of Eastern Star and York Rite meet there. Also, at the bottom floor, is one branch of the Scottish Rite Learning Center, which is a service that provides tutorial services to children with Dyslexia.
