Born in 1743, Sir Joseph Banks was a botanist that travelled with Captain James Cook in the exploration of the Pacific Ocean. Destinations included South America, Tahiti and New Zealand before reaching Australia in 1770.

In Australia Joseph Banks is most famous for a genus of plants that were named in his honour, the 'Banksia'.

This bust of Sir Joseph Banks can be found in the grounds of the Hunter Region Botanic Gardens, where it is located within the part of the gardens set aside exclusively for 'Banksia' genus plants.
