John E. Liggett (June 11, 1826 - November 23, 1897) who later in life was a Liggett & Myers Tobacco Company magnate, started in the tobacco business at an early age 18, when he joined his family's company Foulks & Shaw. The company was owned by his grandfather Christopher Foulks, and stepfather, Hiram Shaw. After his grandfather retired the company became Hiram Shaw & Co and later J. E. Liggett and Brother. In 1873 the Liggett & Myers Tobacco Manufacturing Company was incorporated with John E. Liggett and George Smith Myers as principals. The firm became a leading cigarette and plug tobacco company in the United States. At the time of his death, John E. Liggett had amassed a sizable fortune valued at several million dollars.

The mausoleum is located near the intersection of Tulip and Woodbine (Block 86, Lot 1437) diagonally across Woodbine from the Busch mausoleum in the Bellefontaine Cemetery. Along with the remains of John E. Liggett, the mausoleum has the remains of his immediate family, his wife Elizabeth Jane (Calbreath), son Hiram Shaw Liggett, daughter Dolly and her husband Claude Kilpatrick, daughter Cora and her husband John Fowler.

In front of the mausoleum the second step has deep grooves which are designed to hold ball bearings slipped under the first step. Once the ball bearings are placed the first step can be rolled back revealing stair leading to a burial chamber beneath the mausoleum. In this chamber are the remains of John's mother Elizabeth (Foulks) and her second husband, Hiram Shaw.

The mausoleum is also the final resting place of other family members including Reuben N. Liggett, Mortimer Liggett and Mary Lizzie Liggett and others.
