Prior to the Fall of 2006, there was only one orienteering course available to the public at large in New Jersey. Until Eagle Scout candidate Nat Schaffner began his Eagle Scout Service Project at Turkey Swamp Park in Freehold.

On our last visit to Turkey Swamp Park, I noticed something new, something shiny by the visitor center. It was a reflective badge on a 4x4, with an inscription underneath..."Nat Schaffner Eagle Project Orienteering Course Fall 2006 Troop 18 MCBSA"

There is no particular order that the markers in the course need to be found. Nat has worked out two possible routes. The longer of the two loops takes you three miles through forest and field. A shorter trip of just two miles, keeps you in just the field area.

A map is availble on the website provided below, or information can be found at the Ranger Station in he visitors building by the beginning of the course. Stop and talk with the Ranger...we found him very knowledgeable and helpful.
