The lion stands on Murray Avenue near the the River Murray, the lifeblood of the district. It was unveiled on the 17th October 2000 by the Secretary General of the Communist Party of Fujian Province, China, Mr Wu Yan Nan and the South Australian Premier, Mr John Olsen and his Worship the Mayor, Mr Rod Thomas. This took place to mark the occasion of the First Friendship Exchange Delegation between the the Renmark Paringa District and the City of Shi Shi in 1999-2000.
There have been some trade delegation visits between the two cities and it is hoped that the region will benefit both economically and culturally through this exchange relationship.
Whilst the setting looked quite beautiful initially, the landscaping and surrounding water moat have now deteriorated somewhat, possibly due to the water restrictions that have been in place in South Australia for some time.
