While on a Geocaching excursion I was excited to come to this area. I enjoy the old cemeteries, but I was amazed at this one. With a brisk climb up a hill you enter an open area where there are stones stacked against most of the trees. Then it dawned on me they aren’t just stones, but they are tomb stones. As I took in the area I noted a lot of the stones are no longer standing straight, but they are leaning one way or another. The ones stacked against the trees must have broken off, and someone moved them so they wouldn’t get lost.
I tried to read some of the stones, but they were written in Dutch. Others were so worn that they were no longer legible. It is a true site to see, but it would be most difficult to try and do a charcoal rubbing.
Thanks to the research of fellow Geocachers “The Gray Ghosts”, I was able to find out that one of the people buried here is Abner Allison, the grandfather of president William McKinley. He fought in the war of 1812, and died at age 58.
Again thanks to “The Gray Ghosts” for their research you can find a listing of everyone buried at this cemetery at (
