Graduated from West Point US Military Academy 1846 - Breveted Major for Gallantry in the Mexican War - Served as 1st Lieutenant here at Fort Meade with Co. E 1st US Artillery from Dec 1850 through May 1851 - resigned commission to become professor at Virginia Military Institute - entered confederate service in 1861 at the outbreak of the war between the states - acclaimed for his Shenandoah Valley campaign second Manassas, Sharpsburg, Fredericksburg and Chancellorsville
