Once again, the Convention Hall is Asbury Park sets the stage for Mickey Rourke. First, it was in 1988 with Homeboy...where he boxed in the ring in the Convention Center. This just makes a perfect trifecta of comebacks.
1) The movie's storyline itself is a comeback movie...about a down and out, over-the-hill wrestler that gets another shot.
2) The movie is a comeback for Mickey Rourke, who went down a bad road for a while...gets another shot and gets the Gold(en Globe)
3) The movie is a comeback for the town of Asbury Park...finally being restored to it's "Glory Days"
Many of the film's scenes were taken on the boardwalk in Asbury Park, between the Convention Hall and the Casino. The wrestling scenes were shot inside the Hall, where wrestling matches have been showcased for decades. I remember when I was younger (over 25 years ago now) my father brought me to the wrestling match here. This movie brings back memories.
