The memorial records the names of the brave men of Darlington who volunteered and served in the South African War 1899-1902. The four plaques show the names of the men who died in the war and those who served and returned home. It was erected by the officers and men of the Battalion. Lord Roberts came to Darlington and unveiled the monument on the 5th August 1905.
There is a very interesting website which details all the names on the memorial- (visit link)
