The aqueduct, which is on the National Register of Historic Sites, was built starting in November of 1838 when the first enlargement of the original canal was being built. It was built on dry land and when completed, Nine Mile Creek was rerouted through it. The aqueduct took four years to build and was completed in June of 1841. The whole segment of the new canal called the Jordan level was placed into service in 1846.
