The water is now drawn with a pump and has a verse on the marker plaque inside on the wall.

'NELLS WELL
O fountain pure, whose spring so sure
Has never yet run dry;
Thy water tells of deeper wells
Which living streams supply.
Thy spring, though pure, no thirst can cure
Who drinks will drink in vain;
Go, neighbour, try that deep supply;
Thou ne'er shalt thirst again.'

Nells well was restored in 1873, at the cost of Colonel Higgins, the local estate owner. He also placed the plaque here in 1875 and the stone arch over the well.

Nell also has a plaque on the pub 'The Tinker of Turvey, his dog and his staff, Old Nell with her budget (a small bag or bundle) will make a man laugh' which we'll have to find!

The water supply from the well was closed in 1960 but had been in use since 1600. It was restored and preserved in 2005.
