Waldensian families settled in western North Carolina in 1893, leaving religious and cultural persecution in Italy. They maintain much of their Italian culture which, in part, is expressed in their wine making. This is a family owned and locally supported winery. The owners are very involved in the local Waldensian community and supportive of the local Waldensian cultural events. The winery is one of the oldest in North Carolina.
Most of the grapes are obtained from vineyards from out of the state. North Carolina's climate is not suited for the type of wine preferred by the Waldensian. The wines are made from Concord and Niagara grapes obtained from upstate New York. The winery and tasting room are housed in a refurbished dairy barn. Outdoor seating overlooks the a small vineyard on the property. In addition, there is a Boccia Ball court on the property.
The wines are bold and traditional. We were told that the Heritage Burgundy Valdese wine is typical of table wines served in Waldensian households of the original settlers and in contemporary Waldensian homes. In addition to providing food pairing for each wine, the winery also sells white wine vinegar and marinated mushrooms. According the Waldensian culture, nothing goes to waste. The walls of the tasting room have articles regarding the traditional processing of the grapes.
The unique, classy taste of these wines are just as interesting as the culture that nurtured the Waldensian people of Valdese, North Carolina.
