The Plaque says
John Taylor, 1779 – 1863
Was an engineer of international fame, who spent most of his early career in and around this town.
The canal, linking Tavistock with the port of Morwellham, tunnelling 1.5 miles under Morwell Down was his achievement and remains his memorial.

The plaque is situated on the front of one of the Wharf buildings beside the Tavistock Canal.
