Farms and ranches in the Gilroy area could not have survived long without water pumps powered by windmills, as the scarce surface water often dries up completely in summer. However, cheap water provided by the state water project from the central valley now makes windmills obsolete for all but the most-remote areas. This windmill looks like it could still work, but it wasn't working on this breezy afternoon.
