18. ZOO PARK, Michigan Blvd., between Goold and Augusta Sts. extending to N. Main St., is a sunny, open tract atop the bluff on the north side of the city. Its grassy lawns overlook a wide expanse of Lake Michigan. The Zoo (open) consists of a row of cages along the northern extremity of the park. The collection, begun in 1923, contains about 200 animals and a like number of birds. Recreational facilities include a sailboat lagoon and, in the winter, a skating pond.
---Wisconsin: A Guide to the Badger State, 1941

Today the Zoo has grown considerably and there is a $4 admission fee for adults. The lagoon is still there, but no sailboats run on it.
