This walk is in the Bernal Ranch section of Santa Teresa County Park. It goes from the historic Santa Teresa springs at the base of the foothills to the charming Bernal home, with ten signs along the path explaining the family history and significance of this area. The home itself is behind a picket fence and is only open from 10AM to 4PM Friday, 11AM to 5PM Saturday -- the rest of the park is open for hikers from sunrise to sunset.
From the park website:
"Originally part of Rancho Santa Teresa, the ranch and surrounding 20-acre property are what remains of a nearly 10,000-acre parcel granted to Jose Joaquin Bernal by the Mexican Government in 1834. While most of the original rancho parcel has been developed into suburban neighborhoods, the Bernal-Gulnac-Joice Ranch has been continuously owned and worked by Bernal descendants as a family-operated ranch until 1980."
