The Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. memorial is located in Manfield's Central Park. Each year there is a celebration on June 19th (called Juneteenth) that is celebrated in Mansfield and across the United States. The idea of this celebration is for those that attend to share stories and get to know their communities. This memorial is used as a teaching tool to pass along the teachings of MLK Jr.
The back of the monument has his complete speech he gave the night before he was assasinated.
The Lincoln Highway runs directly through the park and there are memorials to Lincoln as well as MLK. However, I believe the reason for such a large monument is that Mansfield was home to MLK's brother, The Rev. Joel King, Sr.
