Newspaper Rock is a petroglyph panel etched in sandstone that records approximately 2000 years of early man's activities. Prehistoric peoples, probably from the Archaic, Basketmaker, Fremont and Pueblo cultures, all left their mark from B.C. times to 1300 A.D.
In historic times, Utah and Navajo tribesmen left thier contributions.
Unfortunately, so have some not so historic figures.
In Navajo, the rock is called "Tse' Hane'" (Rock that tells a story).
On a personal note, I have visited this site twice, once in 2003 and again in 2006. This site has so many figures etched into the rock, it is nearly impossible to capture through photography. I continue to go back to these places because it is amazing to see something ancient.
What bothers me is that it isn't natural forces that is causing these precious artifacts to be destroyed. Modern man is the biggest force of distruction to these petroglyphs. People have shown little to no respect for these pieces of treasure. If it isn't bolted down somewhere behind walls of a museum, people do not respect the item as irreplaceable.
This site is easily visited while enroute to Canyonlands National Park - Needles District. It is an easy, level walk from the parking lot to the petroglyph panel.
If you plug the coordnates into any mapping program, it will give you street directions as the site is located along UT-211, 25 miles before the entrance to the Needles District.
