Climbed & named by Major Mitchell on August 31, 1836 Mount Clay is more of a hill than a mountain.

There are clear uninterrupted views to the north from the trig point, although visibility was poor when we logged it.

The Southern side of the mountain was used by whalers, who would send smoke signals to the whaling camps around Portland when a whale was spotted.

The trig beacon is surrounded by a multitude of communication towers none of which manage to supply the Portland area with commercial digital television.

Official elevation is 186.25 metres
