William E. "Grumble" Jones was a Confederate Civil War General who was killed during the Battle of the Piedmont in 1864.

William Emondson Jones was born in Southwest Virginia and attended both Emory an Henry College and the United States Military Academy at West Point. He was known by the nickname of “Grumble” because of his irratable disposition that was made famouse during the Civil War. He was so irratable that he insulted General J.E.B. Stuart and was court-martialed for the offense. He was found guilty but General Robert E. Lee intervened and transferred Jones to forces in West Virginia away from General Stuart. Lee considered Jones a valuable asset dispite his irratable disposition and eventually returned to command the Confederate Force in the Shenandoah Valley. . On June 5, 1864, at the Battle of Piedmont, General William E. “Grumble” Jones was shot in the head and killed instantly while leading a charge against superior Union Forces. General Jones was returned to his native Washington County, Virginia as is buried in the cemetery at the Old Glade Springs Presbyterian Church.

William E. Jones was born in May 1824 in Washington County, Virginia and attended Emory an Henry College gratuating in 1844. He also attended the United States Military Academy at West Point. He graduated from West Point in 1848 an was commissioned a second lieutenant and served with the cavalry in the west where he was involved in several battles with the Indians. He resigned his commission in 1857 an returned to his native Washington County Virginia where he became a successful farmer. At the start of the Civil War he raised and commanded the 1st Virginia Regiment and served under General J.E.B. Stuart during the first Battle of Bull Run. During the Civil War Jones rose to the rank of General and fought in a number of high profile battles including First and Second Bull Run, Gettysburg and was involved in the Valley Campaign. In May of 1864 while in command of Confederate Forces in the Shenandoah Valley, Jones was attempting to halt the avance of General David Hunter toward Lynchburg, Virginia. On June 5, 1864, at the Battle of Piedmont, General William E. “Grumble” Jones was shot in the head and killed instantly while leading a charge against superior Union Forces. General Jones was returned to his native Washington County, Virginia as is buried in the cemetery at the Old Glade Springs Presbyterian Church.
