Although women used to compete with men in rodeos, by the 1940s women were mostly limited to beauty pageants when it came to the rodeo world. In the 1940s, however, many women had to take over the family ranch operations and other jobs as husbands and fathers were called to service for World War II. As a result, a new women's rights movement began. In the world of rodeo, this movement began on February 28, 1948. Thirty-eight women met in San Angelo, Texas and formed the Girl's Rodeo Association (GRA). In its inaugural year, the GRA had 74 members and held 60 events.
In 1981, the GRA officially changed its name to the WPRA. By 1985, the WPRA became the first professional women's sports organization to have fiscal equality with their male counterparts.
