The building is part of the California Cotton Mills, which once was the largest cotton mill west of the Mississippi. The mill started in 1883. At the height it employed 1,500 people and was an economic base for the FRruitvale neighborhood. The mill closed in June 1954, after 70 years in operation. (visit link)
