Atchison County, Missouri
This county was organized in 1845 and was named after David R. Atchison,
who was a prominent Missourian.
Linden was the first county seat and after the Honey War, the northern
boundary of Missouri was permanently established by a Supreme Court decision in
1849. Ten miles of Atchison County became Iowa. Therefore, Linden
was considered too far from the center of the county and the seat of justice was
moved to Rock port in 1856.
The first courthouse in Rock Port was a two story brick building built in
1856. It housed soldiers in the second story and horses on the first floor
during the Civil War. It was condemned as unsafe in 1880 after some
tornado damage. - text of marker
