Salt was extracted from a springs in the west, and the salt brought back to St. Louis via this trail. People also used the trail to connect up with the Santa Fe Trail.
Boone's Lick trail was founded by Nathan and Daniel Morgan Boone, sons of famous frontiersman Daniel Boone.
