The capitol building of Oregon has twice been destroyed by fire. In 1855 the almost-completed first structure fell victim to a suspected arsonist from the city of Corvallis, which was competing with Salem for the permanent home of the capitol. And in 1935 faulty wiring caused the second capitol to be destroyed. So it would be understandable if officials had been thinking "Not again!" when a fire struck the governor's chambers on August 30, 2008.
The capitol had been undergoing renovation and upgrade work, and the blaze broke out in an area where materials were stored. Fortunately there were no significant injuries, and the fire was contained to a few offices in the executive section, but the amount of damage due to fire, smoke and water is significant. Early estimates are in the neighborhood of $10 million. The governor and his staff have relocated to offices in the state library across the street, where they will probably remain until his term expires in 2010.
