The Salmon Falls, named for the fish that used to swim upstream to spawn, is on the Deerfield River in Sherburne Fall, MA. Nowadays its dammed up and much of the river bed is visible, and what a sight to see. There are around 50 potholes formed millions of years ago by rocks that got stuck in cracks in the rivebed and by the force of the river would spin in their spot, drilling these potholes. They range from 6 inches to 39 feet in diameter.
Locals and tourists use the area as a swimming hole and know when the alarm goes off they are to get out quickly before the dam is released.
Our first mistake was not knowing we were taking a break at a geological wonder. Our second was leaving and still not knowing, but we did manage to get a few pictures.
