Haynesville is located in Claiborne Parish in the rolling wooded hill country of Northwest Louisiana. The population was 2,679 at the 2000 census. Haynesville proclaims itself the Gateway to Northwest Louisiana. This is possibly so, because it is located on a major north\south highway US-79 almost on the Arkansas Border.

Haynesville was built on an oil boom. The "old boom town" was constructed in what is called Baucum Spur. It consisted of a hotel, restaurants, and saloons. Around 1920, oil was discovered near both Homer and Haynesville with the latter town becoming a boomtown hosting a population of approximately 20,000 persons, which is more than the population of the entire parish today.
