This rail span was originally part of the Mad River and Lake Erie Railroad. The rail line was started in 1835, and was the first railroad to be operated in the state of Ohio. The line was completed between Sandusky, and Springfield, Ohio in 1894.

Over the years the railroad came under control of the Big Four, The New York Central, Penn Central, and Conrail. Today the section of rail here is operated by RailAmerica under the West Central Ohio Port Authority. Freight is hauled on the line between Bellefontaine, and Springfield.
