From the Smithsonian Art Inventory web site (visit link) :
"A dramatic scene depicting four Union soldiers on battlefield, moving forward toward victory. A bearded standard bearer, having fallen in the course of a victorious charge, supports himself on his proper left forearm. His weapon has dropped from his proper left hand and his cap has fallen from his proper right hand. A young private has stepped over his body and is thrusting a furled flag skyward. To his left is an officer, pistol in proper left hand and sword in proper right, continues forward. To the right is another private charging forward.

The memorial which cost $30,000 was funded by Milwaukee financier and businessman Alexander Mitchell, who commissioned the artist in 1885. Fund raising efforts were delayed with Mitchell's death in 1887 and the financial panic of 1893. Eventually, Lydia Elyttewitt took over fund raising, and through various events and the compilation and sale of an autograph book of 2,000 famous American signatures to Capt. Frederick Pabst, funds were raised to complete the statue. (The autograph book is now in the collection of the Milwaukee Public Library's Rare Book Room.) Conway's studio in Italy finished the bronze work and shipped it to Milwaukee."
