The monument was placed by the "North Adams Ladies' Soldiers Aid Society" to honor those from North Adams who served in the Civil War.

It was placed in 1878 and consists of a marble figure of a soldier standing atop a brownstone base.

The inscription on the front plaque reads:

To The Town Of
North Adams
By The Ladies'
Soldiers Aid
Society
