It's not often you get to report a plane crash only days after it happened, let alone one with a relatively happy ending.

Two friends returning from a brief vacation in Mexico apparently crashed their Piper Cherokee on approach to the Monterey Peninsula Airport. Investigations were still ongoing at the time of posting this Waymark, but early reports made it sound like the plane was running short on fuel, and an apparent tank switch led to an interruption of fuel to the engine and the plane apparently lost altitude just short of the runway and made a crash landing in the adjacent golf course. Miraculously the pilot climbed out of the wreckage, but the passenger required a Life Flight to the Bay Area for treatment for more serious injuries to his back, but is expected to recover.

I got there a day or two after the crash, just in time to see some fellows loading the wreckage onto a trailer after cutting off the damaged wings and collecting the miscellaneous debris that was scattered about the area.
