The SLOSS FURNACE, 1st Ave. and 32nd St. N., was one of the first furnaces constructed in the city. From the First Avenue Viaduct, an excellent view may be obtained of the interior of the plant, where workers move briskly in their task of manufacturing pig iron. At night, flaming metal flowing from the furnace lights up the sky and offers a spectacular scene.
TODAY, after being designated a National Historic Landmark, the furnace opened its gates to the public in September 1983, as an historic museum of the City of Birmingham. Its collection consists of two 400-ton blast furnaces and some forty other buildings.
