The Saint Matthew's Catholic parish dates 1893. The current building had its cornerstone laid August 12, 1906. Originally this parish predominately served served Irish and German immigrant population living in the area. Since the 1950's the parish has transitioned to be a predominately African-American parish. The Gothic Revival Church, designed by architect/sculptor Joseph Conradi, is distinguished by its stained glass and exterior stone sculpture.
