Oregon has lost two previous capitol buildings to fire. The original structure was lost by an undetermined cause (rumored to be arson) in 1855, and the second one was lost to an electrical short circuit in 1935. Despite the hardships of the great depression the state started construction on the current building in 1937, and it was completed in time for the 1939 legislature to use. The cornerstone is at the northeast corner of the original structure.
