Methodism dates to 1837 in Jefferson City when the first congregation was formed. The first full-time pastor was appointed in 1841 and the first church building built in 1843. Soon after the Methodist Church divided into two divisions North and South. The Jefferson City church became part of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South. During the Civil War when the Union occupied Jefferson City the church nearly died out. Following the War the church rapidly expanded and built a new church in 1874. The church continued to expand and by the late 1890's it was decided a new larger church building was needed.

The current church building was built beginning in 1900 and completed in 1901. The building was designed by Jefferson City architect Charles Opel in a Romanesque Revival style. The building is constructed of locally quarried limestone. The building was expanded in 1950 and 1984. The building is well maintained and retains its historical integrity.
