QD1010 - USGS 4542, Oregon - U.S. Benchmarks on Waymarking.com

This chiseled square is located along Ore Hwy 242, 4.5 miles NE of McKenzie Pass. The square is chiseled into a boulder on inside of curve, at southwest end of curve, about 17 feet southeast of highway centerline.
The square was probably cut by the U.S. Geological Survey in about 1926. Squares like this were generally used as temporary benchmarks at the time of the initial leveling survey. After the survey was completed, permanent benchmarks were frequently placed somewhere near the temporary points.

ABOUT 4.5 MILES EAST ALONG U.S. HIGHWAY 28 FROM MCKENZIE PASS, DESCHUTES COUNTY, 198 FEET SOUTHWEST OF MILEPOST 81, ON INSIDE OF A CURVE ON THE TOP OF A ROCK, 113 FEET NORTHEAST OF BENCH MARK X 360, 16.7 FEET SOUTHEAST OF THE CENTER LINE OF THE HIGHWAY, 3.0 FEET NORTHEAST OF A WHITE REFERENCE POST. A CHISELED SQUARE.
