In 1970, a group of unhappy philosophers decided that they should do their part to educate the hoards of University of Texas students and hangers-on. Seven years later, Philip Sansone bought the store and set to work transforming it into a metaphysical/philosophy bookstore with about 1000 titles. Over the next seven or eight years, Philip expanded the store (then named Grok books). In 1985 the store moved to a strip shopping center in south Austin and took the name BookPeople. In was (at that time) the largest bookstore in Austin. In 1994 Philip made the bold decision to move back downtown, to take on partners, and to open what would be one of the largest bookstores in the country. Today, BookPeople is a vibrant bookstore that is an integral part of the Austin community, comprising 28,000 feet and about 150,000 titles.

Book People sells new book of all genres, maps, Austin souvenirs and the like.

At what times is the store open for the public?:
Open all week 9am-11pm, 364 days a year. They are closed on Thanksgiving Day and close early on a few holidays.
Are there areas to read inside the store (chairs, couches, etc. etc.): There are comfy chairs scattered about.
