Long Description:
Visited this mill many times while I was growing up. It belonged to one of my best friends grandmother and great aunt and uncles. It now belongs to her mother and cousins. This was truly a family run business. Samuel Wallis was the founder. His son's inherited the mill and farm. Joe ran the mill. Ralph and "Bully" (I never knew his right name, everyone called him Bully) did the farming. Their sister Mary never married and spent her entire life on the farm. She "kept house" and worked side by side with Ralph and Bully's wives. Joe never married either. Most local farmers, including my parents, brought grain here to be ground. It was also the post office for Moreland Township for many years with Joe as postmaster. My mother remebers coming to the mill to pick up her "pullets" (baby chickens) each spring. The mill was originally run by a water wheel. Water was diverted from a local creek into a "race". It traveled under the wheel, turning it and on past the mill and back in to the creek below the mill. We used to climb all through the mill and I remember looking out through windows to the wheel. It was no longer in use as the mill was converted to electricity in the late 1950's. The wheel deterioated and had to be removed several years ago. It is private property and not open to the public though there has been talk of restoring it and creating a museum. I selected current status of "ruin" as the mill is no longer in use but the building looks to be in fairly good shape still.
