A monument commemorating the battle is at this site. It was in this area that Lord Dunmore and his British and Loyalist troops were defeated and forced to retire to Norfolk, Virginia. The Americans later captured the City of Norfolk which was effectively destroyed on January 1, 1776 by the fleeing British. Lord Dunmore escaped on HMS Otter, effectively ending British Colonial Rule in Virginia.
