The Past and Present of Washtenaw County by Samual Beakes 1906 tells us:
'The Methodist Episcopal church of Chelsea was organized by the Rev. Mr. Hedger, who was then preaching at Lima, in 1853. At first the services of this church were held in the Congregational church building. They began to build a structure of their own in 1858, finishing it in 1859. This was replaced in 189 — by the present large and handsome structure in which they hold services. '
