Black Marble spire in the center of the memorial surrounded by 4 gray granite stelae. The spire has the names of 22 Frederick County casualties, 21 KIA and 1 MIA, who lost their lives in Vietnam engraved on it along with the 5 emblems of the US Armed Service branches and a map of Vietnam. The stelae have various scenes generally associated with the Vietnam war as well as a beautiful and moving poem. Interspersed between the stelae are granite benches donated by various groups so you can take time to sit and reflect on and or remember the Vietnam War and it's consequences.

THINK ABOUT THEM - DO I DARE
I TRY TO KEEP THEM TUCKED AWAY
THEY COME OUT TO HAUNT - EVERY DAY
THE GHOSTS ARE FRIENDS THAT I ONCE KNEW
FRIENDS THAT WERE BOTH BRAVE AND TRUE
ALL DIED IN THE SPAN OF JUST ONE YEAR
FOR MOST I NEVER SHED A TEAR
BECAUSE IN WAR, DEATH COMES EACH DAY
EACH SOLDIER MOURNS IN HIS OWN WAY
I CHOSE TO STORE MY GRIEF INSIDE
I GUESS IT WAS MY WAY TO HIDE
BUT AT PEACE I COULD NOT BE
WHILE THESE GHOSTS WERE HAUNTING ME
THEN I REALIZED - THEY ARE NOT HAUNTING
THEY ARE FRIENDS - MERELY WAITING
TO BE REMEMBERED IN SOME WAY
FOR THE PRICE THEY HAD TO PAY
NOW FINALLY AFTER ALL THESE YEARS
I AT LAST CAN SHED MY TEARS
MY GHOSTS WILL STAY ALL MY DAYS
AND I LIKE IT JUST THAT WAY
