After Chase County was split from adjacent Hayes county in 1886 three elections were needed to establish Imperial as the county seat. The first courthouse, which was funded by the Burlington railroad, was a frame building constructed in 1889. It was destroyed by fire in 1910 and the present courthouse was built the following year. The architect, A.T. Simmons, also designed the courthouse in neighboring Dundy County.

This courthouse was placed in the National Register of Historic Places in 1990.
